James

Hi there. My name is James and I am looking to get back into private tutoring having previously tutored Maths at a secondary school and privately. I have always loved Mathematics and problem solving in general, often spending my free time working on puzzles of different sorts. I also have a real passion for teaching. It is what led me into a tutoring role initially and something I have continued to engage in whilst leading and running various groups at of my local church.

Tutoring Experience

I was employed at a secondary school in Surrey, tutoring Maths for Pupil Premium students as well as doing some private tutoring whilst studying for my Masters. I worked with a wide range of students ability-wise across KS3 & 4 and therefore am used to supporting both those seeking to pass and those who desire the higher grades.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that students learn best when they are engaged in the learning process. By that, I mean that rather than just being talked at about a particular method, people learn best by doing and discovering things for themselves.

I therefore seek to make tutoring sessions a lively experience whereby, whatever particular topic we are looking at, the majority of our time together is spent working on associated problems and seeking to guide the student into a deeper understanding of how to solve these problems for themselves. This is particularly important since the changes to the Maths curriculum in recent years that have placed far greater emphasis on students being able to work out an appropriate method for themselves rather than just following a particular memorised formula.

I seek to build the student’s confidence and adapt my delivery to the student themselves and their particular needs. Again, working in a secondary school gave me great experience of this as I encounted hundreds of students each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
