Although a mathematics teacher for nearly thirty five years, my roots and background reside firmly within the working class community. The forth son of a farm worker from the West Country, I appreciate what it means for parents to sacrifice both time and money to allow their children to succeed in life. From my early life working in the agriculture and construction industry through to my teaching career, I have endeavoured to give 100% effort to my employers. I am currently employed by the University of Derby as a Senior Lecturer in Education.
I have primary, secondary and tertiary level experience of both teaching pupils and training mathematics teachers for the classroom. I have taught functional skills, GCSE and A-Level mathematics in addition to tutoring/supervising students at undergraduate and post graduate level in university situations.
The approach I take to tutoring depends upon the learner, their needs and the course of study they are engaged within. I do offer a Top Up Tutor service that enables primary and secondary students to review and consolidate their work of the previous week. In this service, I identify difficulties and problems and try to alleviate them ( In this approach I intentionally don't introduce new techniques or strategies but instead iron out the problems in the approach taken by the learners school). Which ever approach is taken to tutoring I can assure the student that learning takes place in a friendly and non-judgmental manner.
n.b. Although hourly prices are provided on this webpage I do charge an extra 40p a mile for traveling to a tutees residence
