A qualified teacher with a PhD, twenty years school experience and a proven track record of success. I’ve tutored 11+ students into grammar schools, boosted GCSE students beyond their predicted grades, coached A level students into university, and taught undergraduates how to navigate the demands of academic essay-writing. I am an examiner, so I know very well the tricks of the trade required to squeeze students’ answers into the next grade boundary. I’m also a dad of two, and appreciate the trust that is placed in me as a tutor. I enjoy fitness, travel and reading.
My academic qualifications demonstrate my love of learning, my twenty years teaching experience attests to my passion for education, and my successful career in school leadership proves my ability to inspire and succeed. I began my career at Exeter University but quickly realised that a love of teaching outweighed my interest in academic research. Since then, I have enjoyed many roles, including assistant headteacher and head of department. I am also an examiner, having worked for both AQA and Edexcel at different times, and I’m an experienced tutor, having coached many students into grammar schools by preparing them for 11+ examinations. I have helped GCSE students achieve and surpass their predicted grades, and taught A level students to master academic writing. I have a proven track record of success in boosting students’ grades, and both my school students and tutees achieve well above national average. I also specialise in coaching students with SEN needs, particularly those with ASD and ADHD. Whilst I am new to this platform, I would be very happy to provide testimonials from previous parents and tutees.
My approach to teaching very much emphasises the joy of learning. Learning should be something enjoyed by both student and teacher, and this is the key to sustained improvement. Beyond this basic, fundamental rule, however, I also look to help students unlock their own individual potential. This takes a degree of learning on my part, as I work with each student to identify their particular strengths and, importantly, the areas they need to develop. Once identified, individual learning plans can be constructed: some students may need to learn the tricks that allow them to write coherent, well-structured exam answers; others may need to learn the detailed knowledge that will give depth to their extended writing. Every student is different, and the identification of specific needs is essential to enable students to make rapid and sustained progress.
