I am a passionate current classroom teacher with a sense of humour and a lot of empathy for learners who need my help. I have a cat and two adult children. I love everything Brighton has to offer, especially the choir I sing in! I am reliable and will do my best to help you achieve your potential. Since starting to tutor, I have had constant demand by word of mouth and have helped more than 20 tutees achieve their potential.
I have taught English to students aged 11-18 since 2008. I am Curriculum Leader for A Level English Language (AQA), with over 15 years' experience of teaching both English Language and English Language & Literature A Levels. I also teach Criminology (WJEC). I have ongoing tutoring experience with GCSE English Language and English Literature (AQA) as well as KS3. My strength lies in quickly getting to grips with the exact assessment criteria of any Exam Board, and teaching you how to succeed, as well as (hopefully) helping you to develop a love for the subject so that you get more out of it than just a qualification. I have managed to encourage students towards studying at university even if they didn't start out with that intention or didn't believe they had the potential. I also believe that everyone is capable of more than they realise with the right attitude and a strategy that breaks down the key skills required - so I will help you succeed.
Learning well is really within everyone's reach. Tutoring is the ideal way to make this happen, because it is focused and personalised. I expect you to work at least as hard as I do, to take ownership of your learning and progress, because I firmly believe that it is only with that self-confidence that you will be able to tackle whatever your course throws at you. I encourage discussion and feedback - let me know what works for you so we can do more of that together.
Here are some unsolicited comments about my tutoring:
B is enjoying his tutoring and finding it really helpful.
He has really come along with his English which I know you have played a big part in.
Thank you so much for your tutoring this term. It’s made a massive difference to B’s confidence in English and to his grades!
