My ambition was always to be a teacher! It took me many years to reach my goal (being Mum to four children got in the way) I have just retired from my dream career but I still feel that I would like to use the skills that I have developed to support and nurture a love of learning in children.
I am a very busy Mother and Nanny (to ten grandchildren)! I enjoy reading, watching films, travelling (I've just returned from visiting my son, daughter in law and new grand daughter in Canada) I also love walking my little dog Agnes and meeting my friends for coffee!
For the past eleven years I have been a class teacher at Pen Mill Academy in Yeovil (a school in a challenging catchment area - rated Outstanding in its latest Ofsted inspection)
I was the literacy co ordinator and have led Geography, History, computing and Science.
My class consistently reached above average levels and made excellent progress in all areas.
I have been involved in collecting, collating and interpreting data and was part of the school management team.
I have taught and assessed using the new curriculum and have been involved in creating the school's own creative curriculum,
I have tutored and mentored a number of teaching students,
I retired from teaching in July 2015 but have since enjoyed tutoring students in both key stage 1 and 2 and have worked with groups of children supporting them in Maths and English and helping them to become more confident when facing their Sats tests.
During my time as a class teacher I loved inspiring pupils to enjoy learning and had very high expectations of all pupils.
As a tutor I aim to continue to inspire enthusiasm and self confidence by making my teaching relevant and interesting to every individual by taking account of their personal interests, strengths and needs.
In order to ensure pupils maximum progress I aim to:
- make learning fun and relevant
- identify each individuals learning style and use this to make learning easier for them
- encourage. praise and develop pride in achievements
- share progress and set targets with learner
- ensure that the learner knows how to improve
- encourage learners to challenge themselves and change an' ' I can't' attitude to an ' I can' attitude!
- use 'talk for write' style of teaching to develop and improve literacy skills.
- use games and practical activities to support mathematics skills and understanding
