My first glimpse into Education and teaching was at a specialist deaf pre-school in London, England where I worked with young pupils from around the age of 5-6 years old. This had a huge impact on my understanding of teaching and equal opportunities as well as what responsibility we have as a society into creating a place where everyone should be offered the highest level of education regardless of our situation or background. From here I was committed to involving myself in the community in someway and getting in touch with my local area.
I am qualified to teach English as a foreign language (TEFL), English and Literacy, and have done so in the UK and Singapore between the ages of 3-16 years old.
I am also qualified to teach Dance (Performing Arts) and have organised many projects as well as choreographing, teaching and performing both locally and internationally in dance and have thoroughly enjoyed this. I have liaised with different companies and people to cater to different communities whether it be at primary, secondary, after school tuition, private 1-2-1, corporate company and public service level. I have also worked with all ages and have also spent time with Young Offenders and children in Special Schools with learning difficulties.
I have found that my approach in communicating with the other staff I work with has given me confidence in knowing I can benefit them and also help them gain strength, discipline and belief in their own potential. I have spent many years teaching within the dance discipline to all ages and after my English literature degree, more recently English (TEFL). I have been in many situations where I have had to adapt, monitor progress over a period of time and have come out on the other side with great hope and faith in my ability and skill. My leisure interests were always in the arts and humanities e.g. literature, dance, singing, film, acting, writing and so on and I have always tried to combine this into my teaching as every pupil learns in a different way and it is important to try and expand your own approaches to incorporate this.
During my time studying at the Students Associate Scheme (Institute of Education) and also the Teaching English as a Foreign Language course (TEFL), I was able to evolve my teaching to include the academic side including techniques when dealing with pupils who do not speak English and come from a completely different cultural background and have also built on this in New Zealand, continuing to develop my career.
I am a graduate in English Literature BA (Hons) from the University of Westminster, London, England as well as ISTD Gold Distinction qualified with several styles of dance (Latin, Rock’n’Roll, Disco, Freestyle). I am an ex-OTC officer with the Officer’s Training Corps as part of the Ministry of Defence. I trained for almost 2 years during my latter part of the degree and was paid to lead, train and work as an officer which gave me the highest training possible level for discipline and management.
I have just recently completed my MA in Teaching, Education and Leadership at The Mind Lab in Auckland, New Zealand. I am currently in London, UK and have been working as an ESOL teacher with Kaplan International Languages.
