Hi, my name is Jenny and I am a secondary school science teacher.
A little background about me: I graduated in 2012 with a First Class Honours BSc Biochemistry degree from the University of Bristol.
Since completing teacher training in 2012-2013, I have been a qualified science teacher specialising in chemistry. With three years of prior tutoring work plus twelve years of teaching since, including as Head of Chemistry, I have both superb subject knowledge and teaching experience to accommodate learners at all levels and of all learning styles. I have also previously exam marker for OCR and AQA, and have an eye for detail when it comes to examiner expectations and correct terminology.
I have a huge range of resources at hand and excellent expertise in exam preparation techniques, particularly aimed at helping students tackle exam-style questions and memorise the large volumes of information required in science exams! Students need to remember so much with the current syllabi and my teaching style focuses on student understanding but also ways in which students can then apply that knowledge to achieve the most marks.
Whist I can teach any exam board, I specialise in AQA at GCSE level and OCR Salters at A level. L
When not teaching or tutoring, I can be found running around after my two small children and golden retriever, probably very wet and muddy!
Most importantly, my tutoring sessions are focused yet relaxed and friendly - I know some students feel weary about tutoring sessions, especially if they aren’t big fans of school or the subject, and I am really understanding of student needs. Exam anxiety, subject panic, scared of having a go or pure subject avoidance - I’ve seen it all before and can work with students to overcome these obstacles and hopefully help them achieve the grades they need or want.
I have taught for twelve years in two state secondary schools, and throughout that time have taught all ages from 11-18 years old, and at all levels - everything from students targeted grade 2, right up to grade 9! I am both familiar and comfortable teaching students with SEN requirements. I have a superb track record for results and have helped many students jump up 3/4 grades in a relatively short amount of time (along with their own hard work, of course).
Initially it is important to discuss the goals of the individual and what they wish to gain from the tutoring sessions.
Further discussion of their personal strengths and weaknesses will help build a clear and productive plan for the tutoring sessions, with distinct aims set to be achieved.
I always encourage questions and will explain as many times in as many ways as required to put across a concept. Lessons are interactive and I will present and explain information in a multitude of ways.
After explaining concepts and ideas, I am a firm believer that practise makes progress, so will set questions/problems to ensure and extend understanding. Exam technique is so important and I can help students ensure they perfect those techniques!
Please find my new tutoring page, Dot Cross Tutoring, on Facebook if you wish to learn more about what I can offer.
