Hello! My name is Jen and I studied Politics, Sociology and Psychology at the University of Cambridge on a full scholarship. Before that, I obtained 45/45 full points on my IB (International Baccalaureate) diploma in a UK boarding school. I’m based in London.
I realized my love for the humanities late in high school, when I switched to the International Baccalaureate (IB) course from a competitive local school. Having moved around lots and attended different schools, I understand how every student responds to challenges in a different way.
I am friendly, patient and interested in meeting new people. Being a tutor certainly brings me into interesting company, and it makes sure that my reading stays varied and relevant. I enjoy always learning and staying curious, and I won’t treat lessons as mere box-ticking exercises.
I have been attached to an exclusive tutoring agency for 7 years, and have only recently started branching out to take my own students, for greater flexibility. I have mainly tutored students between ages 11 and 18, although my youngest had been just 4!
There is no fixed path to doing well in class and exams. I enjoy spending time getting to know my students and have developed a range of effective tools in teaching. Whilst I offer the standard marking scheme and syllabus-based tutoring, I try to break up dry, academic tasks with creative breaks, such as chatting about relevant news stories or films. For my language students, I would happily recommend TV (watch with subtitles!) and music. Besides private tuition, I have run educational drama workshops and volunteered for Childline, a confidential phone counselling service for young people in the UK. For me, tutoring is about the students’ confidence and well-being as well as getting the best results they can.
