Hi all! My name is Joseph, and I am a bioinformatician at a research institute in Cambridge. I’ve been tutoring since 2018, holding both in-person and online lessons. It’s been a massive privilege to have tutored more than 60 fantastic students over the years, amounting to over 2,000 hours of lessons. I’m passionate about delivering a tailored learning experience to each of my students. Reading their feedback drives me to keep educating. Whatever your background, I’m here to help you through your studies, give you confidence and let you reach your academic goals!
As a young student, I was home-educated until I eventually decided to enrol at our local high school, attending lessons from Year 10 until my GCSE exams. Albeit unusual, I was lucky to have had some amazing tutors who taught me the fundamentals and instilled curiosity. They helped me reach my potential, and I graduated sixth form with 3A*s in biology, chemistry and maths. That summer, I was accepted at Imperial College London to study biochemistry and graduated four years later with first-class honours. Loving the computational side of science, I began a master's degree in bioinformatics, leaving with a distinction in 2021. I hope to return the inspiration they instilled in me by helping the next generation of scientists reach their full potential!
During my time at university, I helped run educational sessions on Python programming for university students and worked as a writer of model exam answers for A-level chemistry past papers. I then spent a year as a research assistant in a neuroscience research lab, where I became an author on two research papers and spent my evenings and weekends tutoring.
Having experienced the benefit of one-to-one lessons first-hand, I hope to give back and encourage my students to pursue their curiosity and achieve their fullest potential.
If you’re interested, please get in touch to ask me any questions and I look forward to arranging a starter lesson!

Taught EMBL-EBI summer schools in bioinformatics and programming (2022 and 2024)
Python Computing Instructor for Imperial College Computational Biology Society (2021).
Model answer writer for a private tuition company (2017).
First lesson: We’ll discuss what you’re looking to get from tuition, such as improving grades, exam technique, or explaining some difficult topics. This is a great chance to talk about anything you’ve been struggling with in school or raise specific questions about your learning. The first lesson is also a trial, so it’s an opportunity to relax and decide if tuition suits you.
Ongoing lessons: Most students book at least one weekly lesson, which is an excellent way to see consistent progress! Although, if you’d rather book lessons ad hoc, this is also completely fine – just email me in advance, and I’ll check my calendar.
Lesson planning: After the trial lesson, we’ll agree on the topics and/or skills to work on during your future lessons. Your specific learning requirements will almost certainly change throughout tuition as well, so please let me know if you’d ever like to change the topic of a lesson beforehand.
Online option: I use an online whiteboard that students will get a copy of for their reference. They can edit the document in real time and download it at their leisure.
Cancellation: If you do need to cancel a lesson, please contact me 24h before the lesson start time, otherwise the lesson shall still be billable.
*** NB: Informal homework can be set if requested. Marking outside of lessons will be billed at my normal hourly rate. Regarding homework set by the student’s school, I am happy to help with any questions they might have but cannot complete any unfinished homework for them.***
