I am a Masters graduate student of Aerospace Engineering at Southampton University looking to enter the world of 1:1 tutoring.
I am using tutoring as a basis to begin some earnings to save up for travelling next year. I am friendly, comitted, and achieved an A* in Maths and Further Maths and a 9 at GCSE.
I have a love for Maths, Physics and all things logic-based so am pursuing teaching others what I have learnt over the years, focusing on GCSE and A-Level Maths.
During my A-Levels I worked in an accelerated group that took Maths A-Level in one year. This allowed for my Further Maths A-Level to be taken independantly in my second year (Year 13). Oftentimes I found myself assisting my friends who took the standard Maths A-Level across 2 years. This included methods that I was taught but they were not, or just simply walking/talking them through how I would approach the problem.
During University, I joined an online tutoring company where I remotely support over forty Year 10/11 students with GCSE Maths. The students attend online teaching lessons (not run by me), but can message or send me questions at any point during the course regarding their lessons or homeworks - allowing us to "mentor" them. During busy revision peroids I often found myself annotating their completed past papers or providing additional resources for the students.
At times I found it difficult to explain Maths problems through text so am pursing 1:1 tutoring so that I can better aid those that want it.
My approach to Maths is to teach the basics and foundations of what you are doing. If a student is capable of fully understanding why a process needs to be completed, then they will be abe to logically walk themself through any question given to them.
I find this is a key problem in Maths teaching; many students will be able to answer questions they have seen before, but when presented with a new problem they may be unable to idenitfy what the question is asking of them.
I dont believe that Maths should be a memory test of what you need to do - there should be logic and reasoning behind every step you take to complete a problem.
