I am highly experienced and qualified as an English tutor with a current C.R.B. check. I moved to the area in 2012, after living in Shenfield for 16 years, where I conducted a very successful private English tuition service. The demand for my tuition was such that I was permanently fully-booked with a lengthy waiting list. My business came entirely through word-of-mouth and recommendation from local schools. I am happy to be developing a similar reputation within the north-Essex area.
I offer face-to-face lessons in addition to those via Skype. These online sessions have proved very successful and avoid the need for students to travel to me, which was clearly beneficial during lockdowns but I am now happy to see students in person.
My experience in tuition is extensive. This experience, for which I can show excellent references, encompasses individual requirements and includes teaching children from the age of eight, to students of eighteen. I have also taught adults wishing to improve their general English skills and English as a Foreign Language in the business environment.
Whilst establishing a relaxed working relationship, I offer tuition in a friendly, encouraging manner which is designed to increase confidence. A mutual trust is created through this approach whereby a child or an older student is able to explain any concerns they may have about their work in this subject which they are perhaps unhappy to mention in the school environment. I work towards allaying these anxieties by tailoring tuition to individual needs and addressing such concerns. In this way, I help children and students to feel able to approach exams with greater confidence in their own abilities and thereby achieve better results.
Tuition with me ensures that each student is provided with the knowledge needed to improve skills in all areas of English work including comprehension, creative writing and essay-writing, grammar, poetry appreciation, punctuation and spelling. I use a wide variety of resources in lessons such as newspapers, advertising media and literature and make this relevant to each student by including discussions of language in terms of usage, both personal and textual, presentation, style and vocabulary. My aim is to create an interest in this subject, not only in an academic sense but also with the idea of stimulating a sense of enjoyment in reading for its own sake.
Students respond well to this broad approach and are able to widen their vocabulary and write more concisely and effectively as a direct result, this being beneficial in all subjects.
In addition, the improvement in their understanding of rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling also helps to generate greater variety and maturity in their own writing style, which, in turn, enhances overall confidence.
