I usually work as a stage lighting crew chief, so am often guiding and directing less experienced members of crew. I've always had a strong interest and a solid understanding in science and maths generally. Event work is slow at the present and I would like to explore tutoring.
In 2008 I embarked on my PGCE, the aspects I enjoyed most were one-to-one and small group teaching. My last placement was at Redwood Park, a special secondary school, where I could've gone on to become a classroom teacher by doing my NQT year, but I returned to working in stage lighting.
My approach to teaching is to be kind, patient and supportive as I don't think learning happens so effectively when fear is a significant influence. I much prefer to build a solid base of understanding through exploring misconceptions or gaps of understanding than only regurgitating facts or putting numbers into formulas. I also think exam technique can be well worth spending time improving.
