I have been tutoring children from 7-13 years old for the last three years, having taught in prep schools for over ten years previously. I use my extensive knowledge of the entry process into senior schools and their requirements to help families navigate the process. Most of my clients are word of mouth but I have a few slots free at the moment. I tutor children in London and around the world in such places as China, Australia, Japan, Italy, Romania and the States.
I was educated privately in the South East and graduated from Durham University. I worked first in children's publishing and then retrained to be a teacher in Oxford. My first job was in a state primary in Oxfordshire and then at an independent boys' prep school, Aysgarth School, in North Yorkshire teaching English and Latin. I moved to The Elms in Worcestershire as Director of Studies and then on to Rye St Antony in Oxford as Head of Prep. These schools send children to top secondary schools around the country and I worked with both children and parents to get them where they wanted to go.
When not tutoring, I am writing and acting as a literary agent for teachers who write for children.
I love puzzles, riddles and brain teasers, which I regularly share with my students.
I have a gorgeous daughter who is going through the senior school process at present and three dogs (which is foolish frankly)!
I am a very experienced teacher and tutor, as well as an independent schools consultant. I teach online readying children for VR and English pre-tests and 11+ for top London schools, including St Paul's, SPGS, Latymer Upper, Westminster, Godolphin and Latymer, NLCS, as well as academically selective schools throughout the UK, including Eton, Wycombe Abbey, Winchester. Having been Director of Studies in prep schools, I know the system and understand what the different senior schools are looking for in children.
I have also worked with potential academic scholars, with pupils winning scholarships to schools including Cheltenham Ladies College, Eton, Winchester, Oundle, Rugby, Uppingham, Shrewsbury, Sevenoaks and others.
I always do a first free trial session with a potential tutee because I want to be sure that we can work together, that the tutee wants to be tutored and to understand the tutee's individual learning styles. If I don't feel that we can work together, or that the potential tutee is not ready for tutoring, I do say. I like to work collaboratively with parents giving feedback after every session, supplying homework and advising on reading material and mind-broadening activities.
I strongly believe there is no such thing as a 'best' school, but there is a best school for your child.
