I graduated in 2014 with a first-class joint degree in English Literature and Philosophy from the University of Bristol, and in 2015 I graduated with an MPhil in International Peace Studies from Trinity College Dublin, where I was an academic prize winner. Since then I have completed an MBA and pursued a career focused on climate change, but I really enjoy tutoring in my spare time and coming up with fun ways to share my love for humanities subjects! I'm currently taking a career break and have more time on my hands to get stuck in.
8 year's experience of academic tutoring, teaching students aged between 4 and 18 in English Literature, Language and Creative Writing, History, Religious Studies and Latin.
Experience of group teaching and one-to-one.
I have run group workshops on creative writing and essay structure for 11+ and GCSE English. I have also tutored university students (Undergraduate and Masters) in essay writing.
I think the key to being a good tutor is taking the time to tailor each session to the individual student. I always start by working with the student to determine their specific requirements. Do they need to develop their essay writing skills? Do they need to increase their understanding of a text or argument? What result are they hoping for? How long do we have to work towards it? I create a weekly session plan with the student to agree main areas of focus to work towards the best result possible.
Between tutoring sessions, I spend my time putting together study guides, drawing up mind maps to help the student understand each topic, and writing practice exam questions to work towards achieving a higher grade.
I take a structured yet relaxed approach, recognising that understanding of a subject is always enhanced within a creative and engaging environment.
