I have a strong scientific and academic background with a first class Masters in Chemistry degree. Since graduating, I spent 15 years working as a research chemist within the pharmaceutical industry before becoming a primary school teaching assistant and part time teacher. I have continued my own education, taking several Open University courses (chance risk and health (statistics), human genetics and health issues, human biology and molecular and cell biology) and courses in education theory and practice. I am a mother to two inquisitive young boys so am adept at answering the question "but why?".

Tutoring Experience

I have tutored maths and science from primary age to A level, tailoring my approach to the individual student's needs. I have experience of heIping students achieve required pass grades in resits and also achieving the top grades available. I have excellent curriculum knowledge across maths and science. Students have benefitted from exam technique coaching, looking at specific topics and general work to build confidence and increase enjoyment of a subject or to reinforce school lesson learning. Whilst most of my sessions used to be in person, since the pandemic I have successfully adapted to internet tutoring and can use FaceTime, Skype or Zoom for sessions. I also now work within a junior school (yrs 3-6), working with individual children (often with specific educational needs, performing assessments and making recommendations on how to support them to achieve their potential) and also teaching groups and whole classes, particularly in maths and science.

Tutoring Approach

I like to look at problems from different angles, so will try to explain a theory or concept from a different perspective if one approach does not appear to be working. I think people learn best and remember things if they have solved a problem themselves rather than being simply told a solution, so I aim to provide support, guidance and questioning to enable the student to problem solve themselves. I am very enthusiastic about maths, science and sharing knowledge.
