I am a friendly and experienced academic tutor located in Dunbar, East Lothian.
I have 3 young children who keep me very busy, but I’m available locally for tuition in all primary subjects and for Entrance exams they may be preparing for.
I recognise that we all learn at a pace that works for us, so the support is tailored to the child. It’s important that your child has input into their tutoring and feels comfortable feeding back about what is working well or not.
Following the disruption to learning in 2020 and now 2021, I am conscious how parents feel about what their child has missed out on and if they are 'further behind' than before. However, let's focus on just the one person, the student. Can you pinpoint what it is they need support on. It might be subject knowledge, but more often than not technique needs to be developed alongside that skill of 'what is the marker/examiner looking for here?'
Availability wise I can come to you on a Monday Wednesday or Friday between 8am and 2pm
I have been a personal tutor since 1999 in Newcastle, Edinburgh and East Lothian, helping children gain confidence and develop their enquiring mind in a variety of subjects, with English being at the core of my speciality.
I studied for a PGDE in Primary Education in 2007 at Moray House School of Education and during my studies undertook placements leading a classroom in schools throughout Edinburgh. In addition to tutoring primary aged pupils, I am a Common Entrance tutor and have helped pupils prepare for these important examinations for example to Harrow, Eton and Fettes.
I am very keen to work with parents and their child together to ensure that the right areas are being taught, practiced or reinforced.
I am a very approachable tutor for both parents and pupils and am keen to ensure that my time with you is used most effectively. I am confident working with all abilities and make sure learning is enjoyable and broken up into chunks if needed.
I try and make my sessions sociable and un-school like and incorporate a free (uncharged) 5 minute break into tutoring for primary age pupils, so the child remains fresh and stimulated.
I am especially experienced tutoring English, in particular developing strategies for tackling comprehension exercises and improving creative writing. I can do single sessions in the lead up to exams as well as concentrated blocks.
I have recently started paired or group tuition for children with a shared support focus. These are charged at reduced rates, so do ask for more details.
