I am a semi-retired ex-Head of Psychology (Woodhouse Grove, Bradford). Until June 2013 I also taught A-Level Psychology and Sociology one day a week at another school (Rossett, Harrogate). I have also taught Psychology and Sociology on a university access course at Leeds City College. The 'semi-retired' is because, in addition to tutoring, I also teach adult evening classes ('night school') at Rossett.
My book, 'Knowing Me, Knowing You: an Integrated SocioPsychology Guide to Personal Fulfilment & Better Relationships' was described by one reviewer on Amazon as the 'best Psychology book of the year!' (2006). I had 2 chapters included in a compendium, 'Developmental Innovation: Emerging Worldviews and Individual Learning', published Summer 2015. In 2018 I was a keynote speaker at a Psychology conference in Texas (Spiral Dynamics Summit for the Future). In 2019 I was interviewed via videoconferencing for the first Integral African Conference in Johannesburg. In June 2020 I carried out a webinar for the Institute of Islamic Thought's Advancing Education for Women in Muslim Societies initiative.
I have supplied human resources consultancy to organisations in the past and in 2020 decided to bring to an end a 18-year career as a part-time psychotherapist.
So I do Psychology 'for real'! - which helps take Psychology out of the text book and make it so much more relevant for tutees.
Please note that I am now working on a limited timetable as I am heading towards retirement at the end of this academic year. Accordingly I am only taking on Year 13s who will sit the exam in May-June 2025. I have time on Tuesdays 11:15 AM to 4:15 and Saturday mornings 10-12:30. After New Year I open up Saturday afternoons, After Easter Sunday I open up Sundays 10 AM to 5 PM for tutees wanting extra tuition in the run-up to the exams.
I have taught the AQA Psychology specification very successfully on a part-time basis since 2003 and began tutoring in it in 2007.
This is my 17th year of providing private tuition. Having originally been approached by some ex-students I had taught for a term on supply, I found I enjoyed tuition and so decided to use a highly-reputable agency like First Tutors to expand this side of my business.
While I don't advertise myself as doing tuition at degree level, I have now tutored students right through to getting their Psychology degree.
My preference is to use the tutee's own textbook(s) as the core material for the work. However, I bring in additional materials, including selections from other text books, mind maps (spider diagrams) and case studies. Part of my web site contains material relevant to the A-Level specifications which I encourage tutees to use as supplemental material - though only under my supervision.
I may relate (appropriately censored) anecdotes from my own career as a therapist and consultant to illustrate certain points.
As exam technique is in many ways as important as the content of the specification, I usually set tutees homework to do practice exam questions in between tutor sessions and e-mail them to me for marking. We can then go through the marked answer at the next session. I also help tutees to think about what they are putting down on paper by getting them to indicate where in their answer they think they've scored marks and what type of mark.
Please note that I do expect tutees to complete work set for them and may contact parents with concerns re quality of work and/or attitude if I think it appropriate.
The rate of £30 per hour includes setting and marking of homework and appropriate liaison with parents. I will mark work that the tutee has done from their own initiative but that is subject to a separate charge.
All relevant charges are payable at the end of the lesson. In person sessions in cash or by immediate bank transfer. Online sessions by bank transfer upon receipt of invoice which will usually be emailed within an hour of completing the session.
Tutees should commit to a regular weekly slot so it becomes part of their routine and I can arrange my other commitments around them.
Please also note that if a tuition session is cancelled with less than 12 hours notice or a tutee simply fails to attend a session, I reserve the right to charge a 'late notice/cancellation' fee of £15.00.
Please note that, in the event of the tutee or contracting parent failing to pay the full amount at the end of a session, I reserve the right to insist on receiving payment at the beginning of future sessions.
