I am an enthusiastic and engaging History teacher with excellent subject knowledge and a drive to reflect and improve. I have proven ability to support KS4 students to meet and exceed attainment targets, whilst embedding a love of my subject, History. I also have extensive experience of teaching KS3 students, and am passionate about the importance of these years to develop a love of learning and lay the foundations for future studies at KS4.
I am a University of York BA History graduate, and hold a PGCE with distinction in Secondary History from the University of Sussex. During my training year and five years full time teaching, I have worked in three schools and taught History at KS3, GCSE and A-level. In my last school, our History department secured the best History GCSE results in the county, and in the last two academic years, over half the students in my mixed ability class achieved grades 7-9. This meant that many students exceeded their attainment target by one or two grades. I have mentored trainee and NQT teachers, and been awarded SLE (Specialist Leader of Education) status for my leadership in the development of primary schools’ History curriculums.
I believe that History is a discipline first and foremost. Making progress in History is about becoming more confident in the skills of inference, analysis and evaluation. It's about learning to handle evidence, and being prepared to pick it apart with your knowledge. This is the same no matter what level you are studying at, and I embed this practice into all my History teaching. I am passionate about using visual sources and cultural references to make lessons memorable and enriching, and combine this with rigorous and clear methods for tackling GCSE exam questions. History is such an enjoyable subject to teach because it is exciting, illuminating and powerful. If you are struggling to enjoy History, or are feeling overwhelmed by the amount you have to learn, then hopefully I can help by giving you simple and effective methods for extended answers whilst making it enjoyable and rewarding.
