Private English and French Tutor in Hertford

online tuition only at present

I have a Masters degree from UCL and earned a 1st Class Honours degree in English at the University of York. I have spent the last ten years teaching both privately and in schools in the UK, France and Spain. My main interests are literature, language, creative writing and music. I am a published poet and songwriter, and I teach piano and guitar to beginners. My students would describe me as a creative teacher who is supportive, very encouraging and organised!

Tutoring Experience

I have been teaching English Literature and Language for ten years now, and teaching French for the past five. I have experience working with young learners, 11+ candidates, GCSE candidates, A level students, university students and adults. As a CELTA-qualified EFL teacher, I have experience teaching English to mixed-ability, multilingual groups and individuals, with children and adults. To date, I've taught in London, Oxford, Brighton, Paris, Nice and Barcelona.

I have a particular interest in teaching music and creative writing should you be looking for personalised creative learning for your child.

Tutoring Approach

I am confident in my ability to recognise a student's needs and I prioritise adapting my teaching to suit the pupil and setting. I am keen for my students to take responsibility for their learning where possible, suggesting topics for the lessons and identifying their own areas for improvement. I believe this is the most rewarding approach for the student. The most important thing is that the student is engaged by the lesson content and comfortable with the way that the lessons are taught. I think it is valuable to use set guidebooks and course books where available, but also to move away from these with more imaginative (often more creative) learning strategies, to ensure that learning is enjoyable, fulfilling, new and challenging.
