Recently retired from the classroom, but still passionate about my subject. I have worked in NE England for the last 30 years, but originally from Scotland. My specialism is the Tudors, but have experience of teaching all major exam boards and a wide variety of historical periods. I continue to work as a senior examiner and Moderator for a major exam board. I love history but my other passion is literature and run a local book group.
I can offer tuition for GCSE and A Level History. This can be guidance to aid answering exam questions or helping to navigate difficult content /subject matter. I am also keen to instill a passion for the subject before GCSE so offer History investigations for younger students ( Key Stage 3) to engage their interest in the subject. This might be a focus on an individual or and event in History. It could also be a preparation for anyone thinking of taking GCSE History .
30 years teaching History in am 11-18 school. 28 of those years involved holding a senior position in the school. for most of my career I have been Head of History then Head of Humanities. I have taught GCSE and A Level since my career started and have developed the history curriculum to adapt to the needs of our learners and changes within the exam system. I have been a private tutor for 4 years to home educated students and students in schools. My students have all achieved success in their exams. As a senior examiner and moderator for A Level History have first hand knowledge of the exam requirements and standards. I have enhanced DBS status.
My aim is to inspire a love for this fascinating subject and to build confidence in mastering the requirements of examinations. My lessons involve interaction and engagement in discussion; interrogation of evidence and questioning. I make frequent use of assessment for learning by incorporating mark schemes and example answers in my lessons. My lessons are bespoke to the learner and adapted to their needs/requirements. If sitting exams, past papers will be set and feedback will be constructive and exam standard.
I use Google Classroom and Google Meet for my sessions. This allows for easy sharing and presenting. All lessons have a PowerPoint/material which is uploaded to the individuals' classrooms during the session. This allows the student to go back and refer to the information at a later date/during revision. Students and parents have found this really helpful.
