My name is Luke, I’m a second year Mathematics Bsc student at the University of Birmingham. I’ve always had a passion for maths, having always loved doing every challenge question I could get my hands on back in school and enjoy explaining concepts to my friends when they have trouble grasping them. Although, my life is not just maths - I love travelling, meeting new people and trying new things.
I mentored first year GCSE students for a year whilst in college through a school led program, where I picked up my interest in teaching others. I have taken on a few students, starting with extended family and friends, more recently to local GCSE students. Having received the highest grades possible in all Maths, Further Maths and Physics GCSEs, I am confident in my knowledge of the content and ways to go about teaching and explaining different topic to others.
I strongly believe that tutors need to personalise their approaches to different tutees, after all everyone finds different ways to learn more or less useful than others. I like to take time to understand how best to tutor a given student, always taking interest in how the student would initially go about combatting a question in order to dissect where abouts their thinking might be leading them astray. I ask for students to come into a session with a topic or even better questions that they have been struggling with, so that time is never wasted on content they may already be happy with.
