I am a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol. My research centres on identity in Roman-period Egypt, focusing in particular on funerary inscriptions in Latin and Greek. I also hold a BA and MA in Egyptology from the University of Liverpool.
My linguistic competence is broad and includes Egyptian hieroglyphs, Coptic, Classical Greek, Latin, Biblical Hebrew, Biblical Aramaic, Phoenician and Classical Arabic. I have a broad interest in ancient languages and literature. For Greek and Latin, I am particularly interested in the Homeric epics and the writings of Herodotos, Lucian of Samosata, Livy and Virgil.
I have five years' experience in lecturing at the University of Bristol, teaching the Persian, Greek, Hellenistic and Roman history. I also have seven years' experience in teaching ancient Egyptian language and hieroglyphs to adult learners at all levels, both in classroom settings and the online platform Zoom.
Since 2017, I have been involved in the outreach programme Classics For All, which involves creating and delivering workshops on ancient history to school pupils of all age groups and backgrounds. The workshops I delivered include ‘The Roman Emperor as Egyptian Pharaoh’, ‘Monsters in the Homeric Epics’ and ‘Egyptian animal gods’.
I am happy to tutor anyone who is interested in the ancient world, Classical Civilisation and Latin. A fundamental principle in my teaching is that anyone can study an ancient language, but there is no universal method that works for every student. As such, my approach is tailored to the needs and interests of the individual student. My language teaching tends to focus on vocabulary as the basic building blocks of learning, with grammar principles introduced gently in conjunction with the vocabulary. As my approach is also centred on acquiring good reading competence, I favour introducing practice sentences and paragraphs as quicly as possible, in order to build confidence around reading.
