Hi, I'm Marawan, a physics student at the University of Manchester. I went to Dubai English Speaking College where I obtained 12 A*s in my GCSEs, followed by Pate's Grammar School in Cheltenham where I did my A levels. When I was at Pate's, I was a science outreach volunteer. For the first half of year 13, myself and 20 others went down to the local primary school, Sir Thomas More, where we taught science through project-based learning and activities. Despite obviously being a total nerd, I'm not socially inept and I enjoy playing various team sports and going out with friends. I was head boy of my house at school, so I know how to communicate with younger people and get the best out of them.
I have previously tutored for about a year at school, where I tutored a year 10 student in GCSE Maths. He was quite a promising student, however he underperformed in tests. After a few sessions, we concluded that he couldn't really learn maths in the way it was being taught in lessons. So, I approached the subject from a different angle, one that allowed him to really sink his teeth into the concepts. This is largely how I tutor - I identify the certain way of teaching that works for the pupil, and I apply it. Having done a further four years of maths and physics, I am confident that I would make an even better tutor now, and have expanded into A level maths tutoring too.
Lesson structure must always depend on the actual person doing the learning as it will matter to them most, but it will loosely feature content to teach and note down, then problems to solve, to test understanding. Each lesson I may test the mentored pupil on the previous lesson, and if the content is module/unit-based, I'll do an end of unit test.
The key advantage of tutoring is how personal it is. When I mentored at school, the students I was tutoring found it especially helpful when I went over concepts they had already covered but in a style that suited the way they learnt. This is an approach I will try and repeat.
