I graduated with a BSC in Biological Chemistry from the University of Kent in 1979. My first career was in Human Resources and it was as a Corporate Personnel Manager in a large multinational company that I was able to begin to hone my interpersonal and communication skills. As part of this role I was involved in negotiating and training at many different levels. In my career gap, while my children were small, I worked as a Teacher with the National Childbirth Trust, and ran the local branch for a while. As my children grew I embarked on my PGCE and started my teaching career in 1997. I am passionate about education, and it has brought me huge satisfaction and joy to see many young people succeed and go on to fulfilling university courses and careers. I believe everyone deserves these opportunities in life.
I have been teaching for over 20 years, with the last 12 years as Head of Chemistry at The Skinners’s School in Tunbridge Wells. I have an excellent track record of achieving results, both for my own students and for those in my department. I have tutored students at both GCSE and A level in Chemistry for many years.
I am approachable and friendly, my tutoring sessions are very relaxed. I often find that I need to develop student’s confidence in their own ability, especially as they may have felt they were failing in the past. I encourage students to work through problems and explore what they already know on a topic before building on their knowledge and testing through oral questioning and exam questions to confirm knowledge and build confidence. I aim to encourage independent learning and not dependence on myself, as the tutor, to do the work.
