Home Tuition for Maths and English in Rugby

I have worked in primary education for over 17 years. Starting off as a teaching assistant, a job that fitted in with my then young family. I soon realised that children responded well to my calm and clear approach to teaching and I developed a passion for teaching and seeing children develop their confidence and progress academically. This passion led to me studying for a degree part-time whilst working and bringing up my family. I completed my teacher training in 2015 and have been teaching ever since.

Tutoring Experience

I worked in a Coventry Primary school for six years in Reception, Year One and Year 5. In October 2021 I started working as a supply teacher in Warwickshire covering all primary age groups. Through studying early years education and working with young children I have gained a wealth of experience of how children learn and develop and this knowledge has influenced my teaching. I have a very good understanding of phonics and have used a number of schemes including Letters and Sounds, Read Write Inc and Little Wandle. I am passionate about reading and the importance of teaching children to read in order for them to improve in all subjects. I also have a good understanding of maths and how it is important for children to experiment practically with numbers in order to truly understand maths concepts.

Tutoring Approach

My approach would be to get to know the child first and how they learn best, be it visually, auditory or hands on. I believe that confidence is one of the key elements to learning and I would be mindful of this; ensuring that tasks are set at an appropriate level and that I use positive feedback to promote confidence and learning. I would also adapt a fun approach to learning and use a variety of activities to maintain interest as well as keeping a suitable pace and ensuring that we do not move on until the child is secure in what they are doing. Challenge is also important and once a child feels confident it can be rewarding for them as well as productive to face these challenges, given the right support.
