Hello there, my name is Marios Removed, I'm a Cypriot-British national and I've spent the last 8 years calling London home. I've just finished my PhD research at UCL in Auditory Neuroscience (in short I research how sounds are analysed in the brain!). My undergrad is in Pharmacology and I have a passion for all things life sciences because of its potential to make humanity better! In my free time I like to bake, read and play badminton.
In my latest experience with tutoring (in 2021) I was responsible for tutoring and monitoring the progress of two groups of 3 students with biweekly tutorials for the entire term. The students were engaged and managed to dramatically improve their understanding and marks by the end of our programme.
I aim to assess each individual separately to scope their needs before starting with tutorials. The assessment may involve attempting questions from an old paper with minimal impact from my side. After I mark the paper I will know where the strengths weaknesses of the student might lie and will use that to design the tutorials.
The style of my tutorials usually falls within one of two categories: (i) Understanding & inspiration tutorials: where I will try convey an in-depth understanding of the curriculum through readings, conversations and example exercises. I will also try to bring in examples about real world uses of the material at hand to provide a sense of meaning to what we are learning, and (ii) Practice & exam preparation tutorials: where we attempt questions which could come up in a test and attempt them in class, going through all the frequent mistakes students make and all the practical ways to pick up more marks. In these latter tutorials I always like to give time to the students without to get to the answers themselves.
