I grew up in Lancashire and attended the University of Cambridge, where I took a First in History and then stayed on for an MPhil in Early Modern History and a PhD focusing on The Early Stuarts. I still research and write on the period and am currently writing a biography of Charles I.
In my spare time I enjoy opera and classical music, art galleries and museums, as well as watching football and cricket.
I taught first year undergraduates at Cambridge while completing my PhD and tutored at a sixth-form college in Cambridge) in my final year there. For the last eight years I have taught History at top independent senior schools (ages 13-18) and now teach at a leading independent day school in central London. I have taught Edexcel and CIE IGCSE and various boards for A-level (including Edexcel and OCR) as well as CIE Pre-U, while I have also written one of the core textbooks for AQA AS/A-level, and also have extensive experience as an A-level examiner. I have been tutoring one-to-one in my spare time for the last three years from GCSE to Oxbridge entrance level.
Ideally I like to empower tutees to realise how much they already know and how they can deploy and manipulate that knowledge more effectively in essays and other assessed work in order to improve their academic performance. Breaking down harder concepts into simpler stages and key points also helps. I find it useful to assist drawing up essay plans and discussing material through core questions but above all respond to what tutees feel they need to help them improve.
