I am a 57 year old married man. I taught secondary Maths for 7 years and I have now been now a full time tutor for 3+ years which started off by tutoring my own daughter with A Level maths and hence reteaching myself. Previously, I was a farmer for 25 years, so I try to relate Maths to real world situations. I now teach the full range of ages and ability from Key Stage 2 through to A Level. I love Maths but appreciate that many pupils and parents are frightened by past experiences. My first priority is to take away this fear of failure.

Tutoring Experience

I have had experience from KS2 to KS5 in a range of schools: single sex grammar; mixed comprehensive; mixed independent academy in grammar school area. I am a proactive teacher who assesses the needs of my students and strongly believes in good understanding of the basics. I am very happy to go over a topic numerous times using different methods until pupils have gained the confidence they need to make progress. I spent the largest time in my full time teaching career in a school with large number of students with SEND (especially dyslexia and autism) so I am used to varying styles of teaching and have material to suit the varying needs of the pupil.
I have tutored this same range as well as University students needing to learn A level topics. I have assisted nurses with passing a numeracy exam. Firstly face to Face and more recently online. I have also helped students prepare for numeracy exams for university entrance.
Since Covid I moved to online tutoring via zoom and have recently, June 21, reverted to some F2F tutoring.

Tutoring Approach

The student and the parents must be happy and confident that they are making the progress that is required. Tutoring is about the pupil having the confidence to make mistakes in order to learn and hence make progress. I have successfully tutored at KS2, KS3, KS4 as well as KS5, covering all parts of the syllabus in Maths. I am happy to state I do not know everything and at times have to go away and refresh my own learning - learning is a life long process. At A level, tutoring has been both supporting the present teaching in the classroom and tutoring for exam retakes. Given 6 months my students have on average improved 2 grades compared to their previous attempts.
