Matilda

Hi! My name is Matilda and I am a junior doctor in my first year of work. I have also recently completed a first class honours BA degree in Medical Humanities, in which I took english, sociology and philosophy modules, with an interest in bioethics. In my spare time, I like spending time with my two dogs, watching Netflix, baking and going out with my friends.

I took Chemistry, Biology, English Literature and History for my a-levels, alongside applying for medical school. I know what it's like to be balancing it all! I have been tutoring on myTutor for about half a year now, and tutor GCSE science for several regular pupils, alongside group tutorials for English. I also tutor science in person at a school for five regular pupils.

I love studying and discussing science because of how complex the ideas can be; the feeling when you understand a tricky concept and can apply your knowledge to solve a problem is unmatched!

I like to arrange my sessions based on what the student wants to do; using past exam papers and practicing model answers as much as possible. I really enjoy tutoring and helping students to achieve their very best. As such, I like to take an individualistic approach to each of my students - I want to get to know you, how you learn and what I can to do help you reach your goals.

Tutoring Experience

I have worked as a tutor for A Levels and GCSEs for three years, and have tutored and taught medical students alongside my work for the last year. I have experience of AQA / Edexcel exam boards.

Tutoring Approach

I will base my sessions depending on what the pupil wants to work on, whether that is their confidence, their exam technique, or maybe learning a specific topic that they struggle with. With students about to take exams, I mainly like working through past papers together as I find this is a good way to flag up areas that may cause issues for the pupil, and we can then spend time focusing on those areas. Essentially, I like to do whatever is most appropriate for each student!

Typically, lessons with me begin with identifying what you have covered in class. If you know straight away which areas you'd like to focus on, that's great! We then go through each topic with specialized sessions where we cover the knowledge - using PowerPoint presentations, creating mind-maps together - and then apply the knowledge to past paper questions. If you are close to exams, we can do specific exam-based sessions focused on developing exam techniques.

In my English sessions, I like to spend time focusing on the themes and characters of the text you're learning, then moving to spend time discussing or planning answers. If it works for you, I can also set tasks outside of our session - such as finishing an answer - which I can mark and give feedback on. I can also do this for science exam papers - setting a particular set of questions for you and marking them outside of the lesson time, which could be more focused on theory. Essentially, whatever suits you suits me also! :)
