I am an Astrophysics undergraduate currently studying at the University of Nottingham. I attended Sutton Grammar School where I achieved triple A results in my A-levels: Physics, Maths and History. Maths and physics were however my specialist subjects and I am able to help students to improve their skills and achieve their desired grades. I will be available to tutor in the Easter holidays and
period leading up to the summer GCSE exams.
Whilst studying for A levels I took on the role of being a mentor for younger students. This involved helping the students who struggled most with their grades and helping them to structure their own revision as well as providing teaching and extra insight on some of their weaker subjects. This has given me valuable skills for tutoring and given me the experience to be able to help students of all ability ranges. I also have 3 siblings all of whom are undertaking or have completed GCSEs. I have tutored all of my siblings as well as some of their friends.
The two main goals of my approach would be to help students gain a deeper understanding of the content they will be learning and then applying that to exam questions to achieve the best grades. Students I've taught have achieved the highest grades and I have found the following approaches successful:
1) Taking a particularly challenging topic, explaining it in greater depth and with more background, answering any queries, to deepen their understating of not just the material but the ideas behind it. Knowledge of the material alone is not enough to achieve high grades. Context becomes important as higher mark questions often test understanding with seemingly unfamiliar scenarios. The way I teach means a student won’t feel stranded when an exam question on material they are less familiar with arises as they will have the fundamental knowledge to tackle these problems.
2) Attempting past papers and practise questions. Exam technique is a skill in itself and the best way to improve on that is to practice. I have access to a large variety of excellent resources and past papers we can go through and attempt. This would allow the student to get a good understanding of the types of questions they’ll be asked and how to go about answering them to gain the most marks possible. I will also be able to help with tips or tricks for those who have problems with sitting actual exams (problems such as timings and prioritisation of questions). As much as I think understanding the topics that you’re studying is important, ultimately the exam grade you achieve is most likely your main priority. Therefore it will be mine too and I will do my best to help you achieve that.
