Hi everyone! I'm Maya, a third year medical student at Imperial College London. I am absolutely loving studying Medicine; communicating with such a wide variety of people, learning such exciting topics in so much detail and most importantly making a difference, whether small or big, to a patient's day during patient visits. I have had a long journey to get here though; GCSE's, A-levels, BMAT and UKCAT entrance exams, applications and interviews. Because of this I know I am experienced and passionate enough about teaching and helping children, that I can help a student succeed in their studies, exams, applications, or whatever it may be!
Through my experience tutoring and volunteering with children, I have built on my communication and empathy skills, and learnt how to improve a student's confidence, which I think is one of the most important first steps in teaching. I have also developed a way of explaining concepts to students to make them more fun and understandable.
The most important things to me as a tutor are to 1. Find out how the student learns best, 2. Find out what it is the student is struggling with, 3. Improve a students confidence, and 4. Make the topic fun and engaging. I will prepare for each lesson in advance, through the specific exam board textbooks, websites and specifications. I will structure each lesson based on what it is the student finds difficult, while making it fascinating and exciting. Throughout my sessions, I will be asking the students questions continuously to allow for active recall, spaced repetition throughout sessions and across multiple sessions, and rewards. I will also be using many exam style questions, so the students won't be shocked when they enter the exam, and would have had practice and experience. I will always make sure I am encouraging and motivating for the student, as I believe motivation is critical to success.
