I am a qualified Middle Years (English specialist) teacher having graduated from Homerton College, Cambridge and have therefore taught at both primary and secondary level and can offer tutoring in both English, maths and Entrance exam preparation.. My teaching experience has been as a primary classroom teacher, part of intervention teams to support GCSE maths and English and a private tutor since 2008. I have also successfully supported undergraduate essay and dissertation writing with students securing first class results. References can be provided.
Currently, I also write children's fiction and my first novel is being published early 2024.
I began teaching as a corporate professional trainer for 20 years.
Having studied for a PGCE in 2006, I have subsequently taught in both primary and secondary education - independent and state schools. Outside of classroom teaching, I have also developed my private tutoring, as I recognise the need for independent input and an alternative approach to help students.
I have a 100% track record of improving confidence and therefore achievement, in both English and maths. At GCSE level students achieve at least 1 grade if not 2 grades above their predictions, or turn a failed result into a confident pass.
At Higher Education level, undergraduates have produced first class essays and first class dissertations.
I have a breadth of experience in securing at least a placement, although more often than not a scholarship for private school. Over the past two years I have also taken on international students wishing to secure a place at top UK independent schools such as Eton and Harrow.
Developing a good working relationship between the tutor and the student is key.
Barriers to learning and achieving one’s potential are: a lack of confidence; finding the right stimulus; learning at the appropriate pace, and having the balance between encouragement and challenge.
I am confident in using my breadth of experience to engage students in their learning (incorporating learning to learn strategies); to give context to students’ learning (what has been learnt and what links current learning has to future topics); to use appropriate stimuli; to plan a path of progression; to provide continuity and liaise with school staff (where appropriate); to encourage questioning and risk taking and above all to make the experience enjoyable and positive.
I am have also been a sports coach in Bath, leading the Junior rowing squad and understand the value of motivational skills and encouragement to high achievement. Currently I am women's Performance Squad Vice Captain at Monmouth Rowing Club.
