Hello, my name is Michaela. I am an incredibly enthusiastic, experienced and passionate former Head of English and Assistant Principal at a Secondary Academy. I graduated with a degree in Psychology from the University of Leeds and a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Manchester. I currently work at The University of Leeds after recently leaving Secondary education.
I hope to spread a love of learning of English to whichever student I teach and I believe I do this successfully every day through my sheer passion for the subject and determination that every student can succeed and reach their goal- whatever this may be. I am able to form positive relationships with students rapidly which enables them to feel comfortable asking questions, discussing topics and sharing personal ideas on topics.
I have 9 years experience teaching KS3 and KS4 English. I started my teaching career with ‘Teach First’, an organisation that recruits and trains outstanding graduates then places them in schools that need quality teachers the most. I have worked as an English teacher at an Outstanding Academy where I quickly progressed to a position which involved leading teaching and learning across the whole school. I have experience in designing and teaching schemes of learning for both KS3 and KS4 which are suitable for low ability students with Special Educational Needs and for high ability students who are aiming for Grade 9 at GCSE. In 2017, I was promoted to Head of English at a Secondary Academy which recently achieved GCSE results in the top 5% of schools nationally, evidencing my ability to achieve the top results for students in both GCSE English Language and English Literature. I also ran drop in English sessions after school and in form time so have ample experience working on a 1-1 basis with students and understanding how to get the most out of them.
I have personal experience of receiving tuition throughout my own GCSEs which helped me to craft exam technique, understand higher level concepts and have the time to ask questions that I didn’t get he opportunity to in class. My own tutor helped me achieve my goals so I am now in the position where I can help and inspire more young people.
Our initial meeting would help to identify your strengths and areas for development within English and find out the course content that you are studying at school. I would then prepare quality resources to use in future sessions which would involve exam question practice, live marking and use of online tools to support revision. Every session would be student focused and easily adapted depending on what you wanted to study and revise.
