I absolutely love teaching, and I particularly embrace the challenge of helping students to deepen their understanding, identify misconceptions and more importantly - develop their confidence! I have over 25 years experience and have taught in schools both in Manchester and Cornwall. My most recent post was as Head of Physics and Deputy Head of Department in a secondary school in Cornwall, where I taught for 13 years.
I live in Cornwall so am privileged to have access to the sea, where I can go swimming all year round - even in the winter months! I love to read, and my bookshelf is very eclectic. I also love to cook (which is basically an edible form of Chemistry) and less successfully, try to grow things (basically Biology) and I love Astrophysics and Physics in general - what other subject can explain how everything works?
I have extensive experience in the classroom this has enabled me to always reflect on my lessons and think about how students learn. Every student is different and will have different skills; it is my job to identify quickly what students understand and what needs further thought. Having worked as Head of Physics for over a decade, I have kept up to date with the latest advances in Science and Technology, as well as Teaching and Learning. In addition to this, I have worked with the Prince's Teaching Institute - providing CPD and podcasts, based on my teaching styles and experience. Also, each year I work an Examiner for Cambridge International Examinations - this is invaluable in identifying common misconceptions. I have also tutored students locally in preparation for their GCSE exams.
I like to approach a topic by giving some background; telling stories helps to make the connection between people and ideas. I also relate the Physics to everyday life simply because it is there, all around us! I am particularly keen to develop students in both their skills and confidence when it come to the more mathematical aspects of the topics. Many students struggle with this and any issue can be overcome with patience, practice and encouragement.
In summary, I love Physics and want everyone else to love it too! But failing that, at least developing skills, understanding and confidence so that students can achieve their potential in their exams.
