Currently an Oxford student, I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I attended a charter school throughout middle and high school, the final two years of which I completed the International Baccalaureate program and earned the IB diploma in the process. After that, I attended the University of New Mexico where I earned two bachelor's degrees, one with a major in religious studies, and another with a major in philosophy and a minor in mathematics, graduating summa cum laude for both degrees. After taking a year off, I was accepted to the University of Oxford where I am currently working towards an MPhil degree in philosophical theology.
I have formally tutored students at Kumon Math and Reading in New Mexico, U.S.A. Informally, I tutored my cousins through mathematics courses, philosophy, and English at the middle and high school level. Since moving to Oxford, I have worked with various students in GCSE English Language and Literature, and GCSE Mathematics, as well as working with Your Dream School to assist students applying to undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy, theology, English, and other degrees.
Effective teaching has to strike a balance. Too much criticism is unhelpful and demotivating, but failing to push students to do better is equally mistaken. I try to meet students where they are at instead of overwhelming them with every detailed way they could improve. I think students respond well to my attitude of support and good humor.
Generally, I work with students on work they already have (e.g., exam preparation or essay writing required by a class they are taking) rather than create lesson plans myself, but I have no problem doing the latter. Particularly in philosophy, doing so would help me prepare for any teaching assistantships at the university I have coming up.
