Bath English (Foreign Language) and Study Skills Tutor

I am a qualified ESOL teacher with over 30 years’ experience teaching English language and academic writing. I have taught in a variety of contexts to a wide range of students with differing needs. I started my teaching career in Hong Kong working for the British Council, teaching general English and business English as well as preparing students for Cambridge English exams. After a spell in London teaching small groups and individuals, I moved to Barcelona where I taught children and adults, and also worked as a Cambridge English exams examiner.

More recently, I worked for the University of Bath, and in my last position as Head of Academic Skills Programmes, I oversaw courses in English language for international students and classes and tutorials in academic writing for all students.

I have also worked as a teacher trainer on Cambridge English training courses.

Tutoring Experience

My English teaching experience covers all levels of English from beginners to Cambridge Proficiency. On top of many years of preparing students to take First, Advanced and Profiency, being a Cambridge exams examiner has given me further insight into what is needed to succeed at these exams. I have also worked as an IELTS examiner.

While at the University of Bath, I gave both classes and tutorials on academic writing, helping students recognise the characteristics of good academic writing, and showing them how to raise the quality of their own writing (and so get better marks!).

Tutoring Approach

For me the key to successful learning is being very clear about the student's needs - and making sure that the teaching is engaging and fun. I'll find out what you want to achieve and what your gaps in knowledge are, and devise a stimulating programme specific to your needs.
