I hold a Ph.D/DPhil from the University of Oxford, specializing in influenza virus A research for novel drug targets. My academic journey began in Brunei, where I excelled in my GCSE before being awarded the Ministry of Education Scholarship to study at Shrewsbury School in the UK. There, I completed my A-levels with outstanding results, including 3A*s in Further Maths, Maths, and Chemistry.

Prior to Oxford, I graduated with first-class honors in Biochemistry from Imperial College London under the Human Resource Scholarship. During my time at Imperial, I undertook research placements at prestigious institutions such as Cornell University in New York, USA, and the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), now known as The Francis Crick in London.

I was honored to secure The Chancellor Scholarship from the Sultan of Brunei in my first year of the Ph.D. program at Oxford, a testament to my dedication to academia and research.

Beyond my academic pursuits, I am actively involved in the Oxford University Gymnastic Club (OUGYM) and Oxford Cheerleading Club, where I compete at the national level. In my leisure time, I enjoy traveling and playing video games.

Tutoring Experience

I have been passionate about tutoring since my O-level years in Brunei, where I began tutoring primarily through word-of-mouth recommendations. This passion continued during my A-levels in the UK, where I volunteered as a tutor and teacher's assistant at Woodfield Infants School in Shrewsbury.

Throughout my degree, I dedicated myself to offering tuition and academic mentoring, driven solely by my desire to help others succeed. I also spent a year assisting pupils with their homework at the Response Homework Club in London.

Currently, I tutor through a tutoring agency and provide private tutoring for pupils in Oxford and London. Additionally, I served as a tutor for Biochemistry undergraduates at the University of Oxford during term time.

I have experience tutoring pupils for the Common Entrance Exams, as well as students taking A-levels in Maths, Chemistry, and Biology. Furthermore, I offer coaching for students applying for the Biochemistry undergraduate course at the University of Oxford, providing services such as practice interview questions, reviewing personal statements, and offering preparatory materials for interviews.

Here are some reviews of my tutoring services:

"I’ve had Faiz as my chemistry tutor for over six months. He has really helped me understand and overcome my problems and worries regarding the subject throughout our time together. For me, his teaching was very effective, and I left each session feeling more confident and ready to practice questions on my own, which I could then get feedback on in the next session. He also helped me plan my revision schedule, which gave me peace of mind when it came to the exam season as I knew how to revise effectively. Faiz has been a really good tutor; I would highly recommend him."

"I would highly recommend Faiz without hesitation; he was able to engage Lucas, a child who can find it difficult to focus – every single day, to the point that Lucas wanted to go to his sessions, even when they took place after an already long school day. Faiz is personable, always reliable, professional, flexible, and a conscientious tutor. I think Faiz is an outstanding tutor; his skills would benefit children of all ages, from primary school children right up to students taking their A-levels."

Tutoring Approach

My tutoring approach is rooted in fostering a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel empowered to excel. Having started my tutoring journey at a young age, I understand the importance of tailoring my approach to meet the individual needs and learning styles of each student.

I believe in building a strong foundation of understanding by simplifying complex concepts and encouraging critical thinking. Through interactive discussions, real-life examples, and practical applications, I aim to make learning enjoyable and relatable.

I prioritize open communication and feedback, ensuring that students feel comfortable expressing their challenges and goals. This allows me to adapt my teaching methods accordingly and provide personalized guidance.

Furthermore, my experience as a tutor and teacher's assistant has equipped me with the skills to effectively support students of all ages and abilities. Whether preparing for exams or seeking to enhance their understanding, I am dedicated to helping students achieve their academic goals and develop a lifelong passion for learning.
