I lecture and supervise philosophy students at Cambridge University (and have done since 2017) and have several private philosophy students too. My Philosophy PhD is from Cambridge University. My thesis concerned the nature of truth and is under contract to become a book in 2024! My study at Cambridge was fully funded under the very prestigious (Bill) Gates Cambridge scholarship. And I have a philosophy video channel online with over 8,000 subscribers. Besides my academic work, I am married to a wonderful Kiwi girl, and am the father of two very energetic boys (aged 5 and 7).
My qualifications are:
PhD in Philosophy (Cambridge, UK),
MPhil in Philosophy (Cambridge, UK),
MA in Philosophy with distinction (Massey, NZ),
BA(Hons) in Philosophy with distinction (Massey, NZ),
First class bachelors degree in Mathematics and Philosophy (Massey, NZ).#/k#
Since 2017 I have been teaching undergraduate Logic at Cambridge, and I have lectured on the History of Analytic Philosophy and the Nature of Truth at Cambridge too. For the last 7 years I have been supervising Cambridge students, one on one, in their studies in various papers. And I have several private philosophy students studying the AQA A-level, the IB, and from other universities in the UK and US.
I have also done a lot of public speaking, often about philosophy. This has given me important experience at explaining difficult concepts in ways that are understandable (important for tutoring!).
Philosophy is primarily about a method of thinking rather than learning information. One of the first things I do is get my students to understand the positions and why the debates examined, even if centuries old, are still discussed. If a student is confident of a right answer that is usually a sign that they have not been able to fully understand the issue. Because of this, I see my task as creating a challenging but supportive environment where my students can recognise the complexity of some of the most fundamental notions we deploy to understand the world. Once the student sufficiently understands the issue, I encourage them to take a stand and argue their case. I find the quality of argument put forward in essays greatly improves with this approach, and I have consistently had excellent feedback and results.
