Nicola

I am a qualified dyslexia teacher, with over 8 years of tutoring experience.

I am patient and understanding, and will happily work with parents and/or schools to ensure the best support possible for my students.

I am available to tutor both face to face and online. Although my specialism is dyslexia, I also offer homeschooling tuition as well as traditional tuition in the subjects listed.

I am professional and reliable, with experience in teaching a range of age groups; (from year 1 to adult.) My passion is the English language and I offer tuition in English language at GCSE and A Level as well as phonics, grammar and literacy from years 1 to 6). I am familiar with all exam boards, as well as with the phonics screening test.

I also offer sessions where I work through past exam papers with students. Former students have found this extremely helpful, as it allows them time to fully analyse the questions and to consequently structure successful answers without any pressure. This in turn leads to increased confidence in their own ability, and a calmer approach to exam-taking.

I have extensive experience of working with students with additional needs including Autistic Spectrum Disorder, (including Asperger's Syndrome and Pathological Demand Avoidence), dyslexia and dyspraxia. Additionally, I work with students who have cognitive difficulties such as those associated with retaining information. I am also very aware of the effect these conditions may have upon a student's confidence, and consequently put the onus on what a student can do, rather than continually focusing on what they feel they "can't do".

I am also available to tutor English as a second language, tailoring the lessons to the needs of the student:. Pronunciation skills, everyday English, and English for Business are examples of the areas I have taught both to private students, and to those working within a corporate environment.

I am available to help with academic skills, including essay structuring and grammatical composition as well as offering advice on exam techniques.

I am also available to proofread assignments.

Please note: Due to the risk of plagiarism, I am unable to help with any final projects/dissertations.

Please also note; At the moment, I only have availability during school hours and school holidays.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught children of all ages, from (KS1 through to KS5), on a one to one basis, and adults in a variety of settings; including a prison, a further education college and a training provider. I have also worked with these students on a one-to-one basis, assisting them with both their literacy and reading skills.

I have extensive experience of tutoring homeschooled students, focusing on subjects such as English and maths.

I have taught students who need extra support in English and maths through government "welfare-to-work" schemes.

I have also taught ICT and assisted with Learndirect schemes.

I have completed the Award in Education and Training.

I have GCSE English language, English Literature, Maths and Science, all at a higher level pass. I also have A Levels in English Literature and Sociology.

I have an Honours degree in Business Studies with Finance, as well as post graduate qualifications in Psychology.

I have DBS clearance.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is relaxed but consistent. I encourage the student to work through and come up with solutions to tasks themselves. This encourages deep thinking and development of the student's problem-solving skills-set.

Please note that due to increasing petrol costs, I am having to introduce a £5 petrol charge for distances over 5 miles.
