I am an enthusiastic and hardworking individual with a passion for teaching children about subjects that I am myself interested in. I am a good communicator and work well with children, and have thoroughly enjoyed my previous experiences with teaching and tutoring. I am a keen linguist, speaking both Russian and Spanish to a high level of fluency and would certainly feel comfortable tutoring in these. I am also a student of History at university, with a real passion for modern European history, as well as someone with an interest in literature. I consider myself to be a creative person, which allows me to come up with innovative and creative ways of tutoring children.
While in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on my year abroad, I worked with an agency called United English. This organisation took me to different schools around the city, where I would teach Russian children intensive English lessons on a variety of topics, from relationships to Christmas. The children I would teach were a variety of ages, requiring me to be able to prepare lesson plans for different age groups and English-language abilities.
In the spring and summer of 2020 I also volunteered with the Coronavirus Tutoring Initiative, tutoring children who were not at school due to the pandemic. I tutored three children weekly, two at GCSE English Language and Literature, and one at AS-Level History.
The primary thing for me is to find out early on where a child struggles with the subject, as well as which aspects they find interesting. I prefer to have interactive lessons, in which I ask the tutee to do exercises in our sessions, which we can discuss together. I find this more rewarding than me just talking and presenting to the tutee, as I personally have always benefitted from a more interactive approach. I also like to set my tutees some work in between our sessions, as I find this the best way to consolidate the learning that has happened in the session. This will never be a huge amount of work that could interfere with their other studies, but just something to keep the new material and techniques fresh in the mind.
