Maths and History Lessons in Welling

I'm a friendly and patient tutor with over 5 years of experience, and have worked with students on everything from improving their grasp of the core syllabus content, to boosting their writing style across a number of essay-driven subjects, as well as tailored coaching for Oxbridge entrance exams and interviews.

I'm also a First Class Cambridge University MSci graduate from a small village in the English Lake District, now working as a trainee corporate lawyer in London. My own academic and professional experiences, from a small comprehensive school in my village to studying at Cambridge, have taught me the value of hard work and perseverance. Whatever their starting point, I want to help students achieve their academic and professional goals.

My intellectual interests span history, philosophy, economics, and law. This helps me make my lessons engaging and relevant, as I often draw on current affairs and real-world examples to bring topics to life. Outside of tutoring and work, I enjoy hiking, reading, listening to jazz, and exploring new places. I'd like to think that this curiosity and enthusiasm naturally flows into my lessons as well.

After four years at Cambridge, I graduated with a First Class MSci degree in Natural Sciences (History and Philosophy of Science), having previously studied politics, sociology, and philosophy as an undergraduate. My academic achievements include:

1x Christie Prize recipient
2x Gill Prize recipient
2x College Prize recipient
1x Bundy Scholarship recipient
2x Elected Scholar of Magdalene College

Tutoring Experience

I have over 5 years' experience tutoring for A-Levels and GCSEs in History, Mathematics, and Economics, as well as university admissions tutoring. This includes experience in highly tailored tutoring for Oxbridge admissions.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is flexible to accommodate students' needs, but it centres on building both knowledge and confidence, as these together transform results. After reviewing a student's past work and discussing their goals and areas for improvement, we'll work in a focused way on those areas, using materials specific to each student's exam board or curriculum.

I'm deeply curious about history, politics, philosophy, economics, and plenty of other subjects, and I work to spark that same curiosity in my students. Hard work is always easier when it's interesting. I keep lessons positive and engaging, helping students tackle difficult areas without anxiety, and learn to approach their schoolwork with greater confidence.

For Oxbridge coaching, we'll work on honing critical thinking skills and developing compelling personal statements. We'll practice interview techniques and tackle sample admissions test questions, drawing on my own experience of the process. The goal is to present the best version of yourself while being thoroughly prepared for each stage of the application.

Throughout all my teaching, I aim to blend academic rigour with real-world relevance, aiming to provide practical context to learning where this is helpful. This approach helps students not just to excel in exams, but to develop a genuine interest in their subjects that extends beyond the classroom.
