I prefer to tutor in-person, although I work online too. I have been with First Tutors for only two years, but have been the 'Maths Tutor on a Scooter' locally for three decades. (I have a Scottish PVG background-check from last year, and an equivalent English DBS.). My unorthodox highly-visual resources, which are geared specifically to
SQA HIGHER,
GCSE and
SQA NATIONAL 5,
are all very professional in design, and available in pdf format.
(I do NOT offer Scottish Nat 3 or 4, 'Applications of Maths' at any level, nor English A Level.)
For 35 years I have been busy as the 'Maths Tutor on a Scooter' based in West Edinburgh, to SQA Higher. I tutor an average of maybe eight candidates a year. Many original references are available.
A local independent school created a full-time position for me as a one-to-one maths tutor. After twelve happy years, I now invigilate there for SQA. Out of school hours, in the last two years I have tutored 11 candidates for Higher, 4 for GCSE and 18 for National 5. Happily, many of 'my' Higher candidates have been awarded an A grade by SQA ... although I accept that their success depends on the quality of each pupil's in-school teaching (and their own hard work!) as much as on my tuition.
I have created and sold (over the last ten years) many sets of my Times Tables board-game aimed at age 14 to adult. Some players get really quick and competitive. Ask me to give you a free set.
Through no fault of their own, many young people – and some adults – suffer from 'Muddled Maths'; I delight in treating that distressing affliction!
Maths tuition with me is not meant to be like an in-school class. It's a friendly conversation – usually within earshot of a parent – during which some of my mathematical enthusiasm, confidence and logical thought always seem to rub-off. Maths relies on understanding and common-sense, rather than on memory, which is great. I'm keen to help pupils showcase their ability in exams.
I have created a library of unconventional highly-visual teaching material, and leave a copy of each relevant sheet after each tutorial, to make best use of our limited face-to-face time. I love to 'hear the penny drop'! Friendly professionalism is my objective.
