I am completing my Doctorate in Music Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Previously, I graduated from the Royal College of Music with a Master of Music in Composition with Distinction and the University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with First-class Honours. I dont see myself as musically gifted, but someone who has worked hard to reach my current level. This makes me an empathetic teacher, as I understanding the challenges that my students may face first-hand.
Additionally, its important to let students advance at their own speed. My goal is to establish a safe space where students can ask questions, make errors, and try new things. My teaching method is based on my personal experience: curiosity always comes first, followed by practice and constant learning.
Last but not least, I record students progress by maintaining a shared lesson document, where we jot down key points discussed in class. When needed, I also email exercises and readings for further study or revision. For younger students, I usually communicate closely with their parents to ensure that they are aware of their childrens progress too.
