I am a PhD student at the University of St Andrews (ranked top university in the UK by the Guardian and the Times) focusing on population statistics. I hold a first class and distinction in BSc Population & Geography & MSc Social Research Methods with Applied Statistics from the University of Southampton respectively.
I am an organised, responsible, and reliable person and I have held many positions during my academic career such as Senior Prefect, Subject Ambassador and Faculty Representative. I have held paid positions as a part-time Librarian and Student Ambassador at university. I have strong interpersonal and communication skills as I have interacted with children, young people and their parents on a regular basis through presentations, Q&As, and regular conversations.
I was a Subject Ambassador for Geography, History, and German in Sixth Form. I ran revision sessions and support sessions throughout the academic year on these subjects and I helped students with their homework, exam questions, or whole exam papers. I have led many learning sessions at school in English and Maths for a wide range of ages.
I am dedicated to learning (studying a PhD places high premium on research and giving back to the academic community) and I want to share this passion and dedication with my students.
I have tutored since my undergraduate (2018). I have different approaches to tutoring depending on the student's aptitude & learning style thus I am flexible. I have also worked with special educational needs students and I understand the adjustments required in tutoring. With two students, I have increased their grades from 40%-50% to 75%+ within one to two months and all my students have seen at least one grade boundary jump after one to two months of tutoring.
I am dedicated to learning and I want to share this passion and dedication to my students. I am also patient and understanding and will cut no corners so that students understand the topic completely. I am a friendly person and like to fully engage with the student as I think this will increase motivation and understanding. I believe in informal testing to make sure that students not only grasp the concept but be able to translate this in exam-style situations. I am also happy to make worksheets for specific topics and can work through these with the student. I am very devoted to tutoring as this is something I want to continue on as a career.
I believe in making sure that the student has a good understanding of the key material and then work from there with practice questions and oral testing. This will allow the student to become more familiar with the topic and consolidate their knowledge. I have done this with several students with good results.
During my professional tutoring career, I have created worksheets for various sessions and did oral presentations about specific topics. I am more than happy and comfortable in doing these for tutees. Students have really benefited from these and were engaged. I have also created exam-style questions for students which have increased their understanding of what exams require of them. Some examples of history exam-style questions are in my resources below.
