I am a friendly and experienced chemistry teacher with a passion for my subject. Chemistry is one of the most demanding subjects to learn and understand, combining complex and abstract concepts with the need to remember significant amount of facts in order to access the higher grades. The ability to link these ideas, facts and conceptual understanding synoptically at A2 level is essential if students are to be able to access the grades required for the popular career choices of Medicine, Dentistry of Veterinary Science.
I have taught Chemistry at all ages from 11-18 for approaching 30 years and am an experienced Head of Chemistry at a leading Independent School in South west England.
I hold a masters degree in Science and Learning, together with a degree in Chemistry and a PGCE qualification, gaining QTS in 1995.
I have extensive examining experience for Pearson/Edexcel, having examined A level Chemistry since 2001 and as a senior examiner since 2017. I am also a Chemistry Practical Monitor (2016), visiting schools around England to support the delivery and assessment of practical activities and sharing best practice. I have extensive experience of GCSE/A level and supported numerous successful Oxbridge applications and mock interviews with students.
I can offer intensive revision courses or weekly targeted support as required – Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss a programme of study.
I have been a Chemistry teacher throughout my working life, mostly as Head of Chemistry, in the independent sector. Much of that time has been spent tutoring students privately with consistent success. I can tutor online through Zoom or Skype and can also tutor face-to-face if local.
I can improve the performance of students who find the subject difficult, enhancing their understanding of the subject and improving their exam technique. I also have vast experience working with top achieving students, challenging them using extension materials.
Some of my recent students have improved from a grade E to a grade B at A level, with similar success at GCSE. I find the experience in seeing young people thrive and move onto the next stage of their learning journey most rewarding and enjoyable.
I am calm and patient teacher who knows how to get the best out of students, building confidence and demonstrating that hard work and practice, when efficient, leads to students who are more than capable to succeed.
I am friendly in my approach but also have high standards and expectations. I enjoy motivating and supporting young people, helping them to achieve to their full potential. I focus on the needs of the individual and help students build confidence in their learning.
