Peter Booth M.A.(Cantab) P.G.C.E.
Experienced tutor, lecturer and curriculum designer.
I have taught English Literature for most of my career and have worked in schools in the United Kingdom, Spain and Singapore. I specialise in English Literature at A-Level and O-Level. I am also a language specialist and have taught English G.C.S.E. and O-Level in the UK and Singapore, and English as a second language to students in Spain.
My teaching experience spans over 25 years: I have run three English Departments - one in the UK and two in Singapore, and I have worked on the A-Level Curriculum Development Commitee in two Colleges in Singapore. I have also worked on the development of A-Level Literature programmes for the Singapore Examination and Assessment Branch and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate.
I worked in RJC/Raffles Institution, one of the most highly respected A-Level Colleges in South-East Asia, for over seventeen years. At Raffles, where top grades are demanded by both the school and the parents, I was a Tutor/Lecturer. Raffles is ranked as one of the top five schools in the world for achieving places for students at Oxbridge, and also provides students to Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and other prestigious U.S. universities. This experience has enabled me to understand well the needs of A-Level English Literature students, and I endeavour to apply this experience to benefit all my students.
I have been giving tuition online for three years, mostly to students in New Zealand. These students have achieved a 100% pass rate with the majority of them achieving top grades.
In tutorials we will engage in close reading and analysis of texts, in discussion and often supported by PowerPoint presentations and other online materials.
I have a wealth of experience to bring to bear and although I have worked a great deal with gifted students, I have also worked with students who find Literary analysis quite challenging. I am therefore able to adapt my approach and pace accordingly.
I like to think my tutorials are friendly and relaxed but also authoritative when it comes to subject knowledge.
Below are just three of the many comments I receive from students, which give an indication of my style:
'My results came in, and I got 85% in English! There's no way I'd have been able to get anywhere near that high without the humungous effort you put in to help bring me up to speed.
Thank you so much.'
(Online Student, New Zealand)
'The passion you have for the subject has made me even more awed by the beauty of Literature.'
(College Student, Singapore)
'I just want to express my heartfelt gratitude to you for having faith in me and empowering me.'
(Online student, Singapore)
