I am a confident, experienced and enthusiastic teacher of English Language, English Literature and Drama. At present, I am currently working as a private tutor delivering content for both the AQA and EDEXCEL specifications for English Language and English Literature and have created detailed and proven course material that I use and adapt for my students and their needs. I am also tutoring students in preparation for the 11+ and Entrance Exams.
I have been tutoring for 5 years, prior to which I was Head of English at Dulwich High School, Zhuhai for 3 years and, before that, worked at Cockshut Hill Technology College for 7 years where I was an assistant subject leader for 6 years with focuses in interventions, key stage 3 curriculum lead, and data analysis.
This experience has given me an in-depth knowledge of the curriculum and the requirements of the GCSE examinations as well as an understanding of the common errors students make in the exams and strategies I can use to boost student outcomes. Due to this knowledge, my students are normally on or exceeding their target grades. My success at delivering high quality lessons is born out in the waiting list for my tutoring services, the “outstanding” observations that I received at both schools I worked in, and the fact that my class of 100% ESL students achieved 100% A*-A in my most recent GCSE results (whilst I was working at Dulwich, Zhuhai) and that my English classes (also with 100% ESL) achieved over 80% A*-C.
I believe that lessons should be fun and engaging but they also need to be productive. I produce material that is aimed at the individual student and their needs and adapt my style and approach to the needs of the student. My lessons normally begin with a warmer which is followed by three teaching points with activities for the student to complete. We then take these teaching points and apply them in a relevant situation. E.g. A typical writing lesson might have a card sorting vocabulary starter. Three teaching points (structuring paragraphs through time, through place, through person) with activities to help embed this learning. Then a writing challenge that we work on together at first, and then the student completes for themselves. This is always followed by detailed feedback and guidance on what went well and what we could do to get to the next level.
