My name is Phil and I am Head of Politics at an 11-18 school in Surrey. I have previously taught History up to and including A-Level. I have been teaching for six years. I am extremely passionate about the subjects that I teach and this is a passion that is evident when I am tutoring. I only tutor topics in which I am at least a relative expert and can support a tutee to a level that both they, and I, would be happy with . These subjects include, but are not limited to:
Politics: US Government and Politics, Global Politics. UK Government and Politics and Political Ideologies.
History: Modern History (Britain, Italy, Germany, Russia and U.S).
I have a number of resources available to students that I tutor. Depending on the course, these may include extensive revision guides that I have produced.
I am primarily interested in tutoring A-Level or GCSE students.
I have an up to date DBS certificate.
My ability to tutor is dependent on my professional responsbilities, but a regular spot can usually be found and I will inform you in good time of any occasion when I cannot tutor due to responsbilities elsewhere.
I have a Post-Graduate Certificate of Education in History from the University of Bath. This followed graduating from Reading University in 2009 with a First-Class Honours Degree in History. I have taught in three schools, both independent and state sectors, and in each have taught both GCSE and A-Level History. I also teach A Level Politics.
In addition, I am an extremely experienced examiner. I have worked with two different exam boards and at both A-Level and GCSE for the last six years. I examine GCSE and A- level History, A-Level Politics and GCSE Citizenship papers.
As a classroom teacher I have seen the benefit of private tuition for students. However, I firmly believe that tuition works best when the tutor is seeking to complement what a student is doing in the classroom and how they are being supported by their school.
I would aim to make sure I am always doing this and focusing on those areas in which we can make the best use of our time together. In one of our early sessions I will look to build a long-term plan with any tutee to ensure we are making the best use of our time together. When I agree to tutor someone, I am also available via email to answer questions in between sessions.
Private tutoring is not a magic bullet. It is not guarantee of examination success. However, I know that I am able to use my skills and experience to tackle areas of deficiency a student may have, whether that be subject knowledge, examination technique or, sometimes, simply self-confidence.
