I am a young-at-heart tutor. I enjoy helping others and am passionate about teaching & learning in all its forms.
My favourite part of Maths is Algebra, my favourite part of English is Grammar.
I have particular interest and experience in Dyslexia, and I am a qualified test/assessment user, which means I can assess levels of competence, ability, attainment, cognition, etc. and the results can be used to start the application for Exam Access Arrangements, but most importantly can be used to initiate the right kind of support for each individual.
I have also now certified as a Life Coach for children, and run 1-1 and group sessions in key life skills such as thinking positively, standing up to peer pressure, dealing with changes, building self-esteem, setting goals for success, among others. Do feel free to message me for further details.
I have been a Tutor for over 20 years. In that time I have taught children, as young as 3, to read and write, and supported students of all ages and abilities on their road to Further Education.
I have also worked as a Learning Mentor with pupils with EAL (English as an Additional Language), Dyslexia, Social & Emotional Difficulties, among others.
I have attended many courses in 'teaching and learning' including counselling, mediation, and coaching. I was also a Youth Worker for a County Council for a few years, which has allowed me to have a deeper insight into young people's views on learning and life in general.
I use a conjunction of all my knowledge and expertise in my tutoring sessions, in order to not only provide support in knowledge itself, but also provide learning strategies that can be helpful in life overall.
My lessons combine a variety of worksheets, games,
and strategies, which I carefully tailor to each student, creating a personalised programme of support. I also keep log of all the topics we cover, and keep track of exactly when to revisit each topic to allow for all the knowledge to go into long term memory.
I have an ongoing membership to an online learning platform, which my students use for extra practice of each skill I teach, to be used as part of the process of cementing things in long term memory.
This means less time wasted on teaching and re-teaching the same skill year after year, as happens when skills are only covered briefly.
This platform tailors each question to the student's ability and reports this information back to me so I can plan the following session according to their progress, thus maximising our session time. This means less time wasted on worksheets that are too hard or not challenging enough for the student.
All my students get membership to this platform included with my services.
Note: The price stated in the 'special needs' subject is for Dyslexia support, however, I am happy to discuss academic support for other special needs.
