I am a Primary Teacher with 15+ years' experience working in some of the top primary schools in the Leicester and Leicestershire areas. Having a preference for KS2, I consider myself an experienced Year 6 teacher with a successful track record, and am genuinely passionate about the teaching of maths, all aspects of English, French...and music (more on that later)!
With respect to the core subjects, I will aim to help your child prepare thoroughly for the all-important SATs examinations and ensure that he or she understands exactly what is expected of them. We will look at both arithmetical and reasoning-based work with respect to mathematics; once areas of weakness have been diagnosed, we can then begin fine-tuning these whilst fostering an environment where error is welcomed....for I strongly believe that we often learn best through making mistakes. Application of knowledge and skills is key here, and I would ensure your child has sufficient opportunity to do so - this would be an integral part of any lesson.
Whilst my strength in all aspects of mathematics is solid, many would argue that English is, and always has been, my strongest subject. If this is an area of interest, I would aim to improve your child's grasp of the subject by embedding key grammatical concepts at an early stage, again ensuring that he/she applies these concepts regularly in his/her writing. The written word is perhaps unquestionably my strongest academic asset. In terms of reading, we would emphasise not only the conventions of word recognition and enunciation, but also the awareness and development of reasoning and justification skills. Additionally, examination technique and strategies will be addressed for any mathematics and/or English programme as far as SATs preparation is concerned. We shall aim to make lessons fun and engaging, but underpinning any lesson will be plenty of challenge, with progress being a key aim throughout. I consider myself to be flexible in approach (think 'facilitator' rather than 'dictator') and expect my students to take an active part in leading their own learning during lessons - I always aim to make them realise that I believe in their potential, and hopefully - in time - they will believe in themselves too!
Aside from all things SATs, I am very fortunate to be a natural musician who plays the guitar, piano and drums by ear, but I also have a good grounding in reading music / music theory, and am able to teach this as such. I only need to hear a tune (more or less any tune) once or twice in order to be able to play the chords or melody on guitar, drums or piano. I am also a more-or-less fluent speaker of the French language and would be more than happy to teach this to KS2 pupils, possibly even early KS3 if such learners are able to convey their requirements to me.
I also support secondary students in mathematics and French up to GCSE level so please do get in touch if this is your requirement here.
I look forward to our partnership and now await any questions you may have.
